Angelo Heilprin Papers: Expedition to Yucatan and Mexico

Scope and Contents This expedition, the first official one of the Academy, included J. E. Ives, Roberts LeBoutillier, Witmer Stone and Frank C. Baker in the party. Arriving on the 22nd of February, they covered the territory of the northwestern part of Yucatan and the Mexican highlands in the vicinity of Orizaba. Scope and Contents These petitions and resolutions are close pieces, possibly written by the person proposing the action, as a note for the secretary when copying his minutes. Most of them are transcribed into the Minutes of the Academy but oftentimes changed in wording or intent. The petitions number only four and were made mostly to the legislature of Pennsylvania, or to some branch of the Federal Government, their inclusive dates being 1837-1876. Charles Eastwick Smith letters from botanists

Overview Charles Eastwick Smith (1820-1900) was an engineer and inventor involved in railroad, ironworks and steel. His interest in botany led him to membership at the Academy of Natural Sciences where he held several positions from 1851 until his death. Over the years Smith compiled an herbarium of specimens found within 15 miles of Philadelphia, which he bequeathed to the Academy. Scope and Contents In April, 1889 the Provost of the University, William Pepper sent to the officers of the Academy an invitation to move their institution to the campus of the University.
